Jehangir Mehta opens Graffiti Earth at Tribeca’s Duane Street Hotel
The celebrity chef brings an eclectic, plant focused menu to the intimate space which exudes an elegant downtown vibe
New York, NY (May 2016) – Jehangir Mehta, Chef-Owner of Graffiti Food & Wine Bar in Manhattan’s East Village, is pleased to announce the opening of Graffiti Earth at Tribeca’s Duane Street Hotel this spring. An intimate space seating 20, Graffiti Earth will feature Chef Mehta’s signature eclectic style of dishes with a strong emphasis on sustainability in a more elegant downtown vibe.
“Much like Graffiti, the plant-based restaurant I opened in the East Village almost ten years ago, I’m excited to bring this approach to Tribeca,” said Chef Mehta. “At Graffiti Earth, I will be sticking to what has always worked best for me, serving vegetable-based dishes. My focus on being more environmentally conscious will come full circle from the ingredients we cook with to many of the materials used throughout the restaurants. My goal is to foster a balance in all of us and showcase empathy from the causes we believe in to the ingredients we source.”
At Graffiti Earth, Jehangir will serve vegetable-forward courses with flavors rooted in his Indian roots and Persian heritage, creating an interesting juxtapose of temperatures, textures and tastes. Seafood and meat offerings will be beautifully balanced with plant-based options sharing equal billing if not center stage. Mehta will conscientiously focus on working with unloved produce and underutilized seafood, sustainable proteins and healthy grains with the ultimate goal of reducing food waste.
Chef Mehta is well known in the New York restaurant scene for the original Graffiti, whose popular, distinctive style led to a food rating of 28 out of a possible 30 in the 2015 Zagat Guide. Mehta is also known on the national level for his appearances as a contestant on “Iron Chef America” and for earning the title of runner-up on “Next Iron Chef.”
Designed by VLDG Partners of New Jersey, the dining room of Graffiti Earth has the same intimate feeling as the original with a bit more elegance. The new design exudes the feel of a gracious country house in the city and is meant to be an extension of Chef Mehta’s personal works space. Guests will feel as if they are dining in Chef Mehta’s home. A large feature wall displays dishes as a nod to the restaurant’s rural, farmhouse kitchen atmosphere, while warm metals and weathered woods are paired with soft metallic elements for an urban space befitting the restaurant’s Tribeca location. Adorning the walls is a collection of multimedia work from award-winning artist, Shreya Mehta, inspired by Graffiti Earth’s mission and the four elements of nature; earth, water, fire and air.
A communal table that seats ten anchors the space while a counter for four and three tables for couples round out the seating. A private dining room located just outside the main dining room seats nine and is available by advance reservations only.
The newly minted bar featuring cocktails exclusively crafted by master mixologist Milos Zica of downtown’s popular Employees Only is also located in the lobby of Duane Street Hotel. With a moody ambiance, the bar will specialize in an aperitif menu for pre-dinner cocktails and night caps made with specialty vermouths, liqueurs and house infusions. The menu will be simple, clean and easy to digest while still offering interesting creations for the more sophisticated sipper. In addition to classics and re-imagined contemporary classics, Milos’ creations include the Hi Octane, made with aged dark rum, bitters and Grand Marnier offering a robust and complex late night drink. The mescal based Lincoln Says, made with Frambois for a high fruit flavor, sherry for a woody and nutty tone and finished with vermouth produces a great before or after dinner cocktail. Aperitif service starts at 4pm and Chef Mehta has designed a small snack menu to pair with Zica’s cocktails. The bar seats four and includes the lounge that seats ten.
The entrance to Graffiti Earth is located at 190 Church Street in Tribeca. The restaurant will be open for dinner Tuesday thru Thursday, 5:30 pm to 11:00 pm, and Friday and Saturday, 5:30 pm to 12:00 am.
